LATE AT THE GARDEN
Over 18s only

Continuing the party well into the night, Sydney Festival’s Late at the Garden brings out some the finest, wildest and most imaginative local underground and independent bands around to get the dancefloor shaking, swinging and cranking.

From punk-jazz to chainsaw folk, bastardised gypsy to Russian criminal songs, the eclectic Late at the Garden line-up is right at home in The Famous Spiegeltent.

Entry to the Garden is free however capacity is limited and subject to availability at all times.

The Barons of Tang
January 13, 14 & 15

Spawning from the fiery pits of Melbourne, The Barons of Tang is an eight-piece ensemble who bastardise traditional gypsy and tango music to create an incredibly catchy and highly danceable genre they call “gypsy death-core”.

Aronas featuring Aron Ottignon
January 16 & 17

Dubbed as “punk jazz”, ARIA-nominated Aronas is an explosive combination of live dance, jazz and South Pacific-influenced grooves lead by former Sydneysider, New Zealand-born and now London-based jazz pianist, Aron Ottignon.  With driving rhythms, monster grooves and Aron’s original compositions, Aronas impress dance music and jazz audiences alike.

Vulgargrad
January 20, 21 & 22

VulgarGrad return to Late at the Garden with their vodka-infused swing ska punk renditions of Russian criminal songs.  Lead by Jacek Koman, genial man of stage and screen (Children of Men, Moulin Rouge), the band delivers their gulag-style, raucous menace, stripy shirts and a lot of oomph.

The Crooked Fiddle Band
January 23 & 24

Australian Chainsaw-folk vigilantes The Crooked Fiddle Band deliver a no-holds-barred mash up of gypsy passion, bluegrass swampstompers and near metal mayhem.  Relatively new to the live scene, their Balkan-flavoured thrashings have done the rounds and then some – from the usual festivals, pubs and underground warehouse parties around Sydney to one of their recordings being used at the  Australian Synchronised Swimming Duet team Olympic qualifying event in Switzerland.

Ben Walsh’s Orkestra of the Underground
January 27, 28 & 29

Sydney drummer extraordinaire Ben Walsh (The Bird, Circle of Rhythm, Tom Tom Club) brings together some of Sydney’s busiest and best musicians to create the Orkestra of the Underground. Featuring the incredible musicianship of members of The Bird, Hermitude, Ponyclub Massacre, The Crusty Suitcase Band and more, the Orkestra will serve up a dynamic night of dancefloor surprises.

The Bakery
January 30 & 31

An eleven-piece rampaging extravaganza, Sydney’s The Bakery serve up a toasty mélange of musical styles ranging from funk to soul, ska to swing and reggae to drum’n’bass.  With their sole mission to make their audience dance, a night with The Bakery is one big party.

The Spiegel Spins with Jack Shit
Every Sunday from Jan 10 - Feb 1
11.30pm - 1am

Jack Shit is a disc jockey, broad caster and eclectic specialist; renowned for his detailed, site-specific sets of stirring musicality. He has been shamelessly angling for another tilt at twirling tunes within the Spiegel since making his debut there on the tent's first visit to the Festival two years ago. Join him in ending every wondrous week on a high note - as artists and audiences gather, in sumptious surrounds, to celebrate the season in style. Meet and mingle, or dance and sing, as Jack sparks up a summer storm of sounds.

WHAT THE PRESS SAID

“One of the most fascinating aspects of the group is the way it draws connections between the percussion-based cultures of the Pacific islands and the relentless, rhythmic drive of contemporary techno and trance dance music… more” – The Age
